Club of Rome - Time Capsule Project
Winterthur 23.-24 October 2009

On the 23.-24 October 2009, The Club of Rome will host an interactive exhibition to introduce and help educate the general public on current global issues. The theme is simply, what can we do today that will concern us tomorrow? Visitors will have the opportunity to write down their own views and deposit these opinions in a time capsule. The capsule will be stored safely in the town archive of Winterthur and will be opened 25 years from now. Guests can also have their photo taken and attach to it a personal statement. The statements will then be communicated during the event.

The issues being raised by the Club of Rome range from climate change, energy concerns, limited resources and the global economy to demographic and social changes. In addition, the Club of Rome is providing the materials for complementary interactive cases studies for schools giving young people the chance to learn and develop their opinions on current global issues. Their work will be sealed into the capsule also.

If successul this pilot project has the possibility to be echoed around the world. The issues considered in the exhibition are hugely supported by world leaders.

Kofi Annan, President Global Humanitarian Forum Geneva

"Climate change is real. It is happening now and it has a big human impact. Climate change is global, it is the single most important threat and we all must therefore be part of the solution. We have the knowledge, the resources and the technology to reduce the pace of climate change and safeguard people and countries from its impact. What is needed is the vision, courage and the will to act."

Mikhail Gorbachev, Founding President Green Cross International

"Security, poverty or environmental crisis I think that we must understand now, we can no longer postpone action. Sometimes when our colleagues speak in dire terms about the situation we accuse them of alarmism. But if we do not raise the alarm we will waste the remaining few years that we have at our disposal and then we will face chaos."

Ernst Wohlwend, Mayor of the city of Winterthur, Switzerland will seal the time capsule and store it safely in the town hall archive. Axa Winterthur, the leading sponsor along with Pädagogische University Zürich (PHZH), Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (ZHAW) and the Association for Natural Science, Winterthur will work in partnership with the Club of Rome on the project.
